Compare HR software, honestly

You have more options than you might think, and HRGP isn't right for everyone. Here is how the common choices compare for a small business.

HRGP is the HRIS for small business, from the first applicant through payroll. Your payroll processor pays your people and files the taxes. HRGP handles the rest: the records, the documents and the reports.

  1. List the jobs you want off your desk
  2. Work out the real price
  3. Ask what happens with payroll
  4. Try it with a real job

How to compare in an afternoon

  1. List the jobs you want off your desk

Hiring, paperwork, time off, benefits, reports. Be specific. A long feature list doesn't help if it doesn't cover your jobs.

  2. Work out the real price

Check the monthly fee, per-employee fees, setup fees and extras for your headcount today and in two years.

  3. Ask what happens with payroll

Who pays people? Who files taxes? How do hours and new-hire details get there?

  4. Try it with a real job

Use a free trial. Post a job, send a form and ask a coworker to try it on a phone.

The common options

These are general descriptions of each type of tool. Products differ, so check the details with each company before you decide.

When HRGP is a good fit

  • You hire more than once in a while, and more than one person gets involved.
  • You have people in the field who work from a phone.
  • You like your payroll company and don't want to switch.
  • You want one flat price with no per-seat fees.

When something else may suit you better

  • You want one company to do your payroll and your HR on one bill. Look at your payroll provider's HR plans.
  • You need a punch-in time clock inside your HR system.
  • You hire once every few years and a spreadsheet is working fine. Keep it.
  • You have an HR department with complex needs, such as multiple countries. A larger suite may fit better. HRGP is available in the United States and Canada.

Questions to ask any vendor

  • What is my total monthly cost at my headcount, and at twice my headcount?
  • Which features are in my plan, and which cost extra?
  • Can I get my data out if I leave?
  • Who can see pay and Social Security numbers, and how are they protected?
  • Does it work on a phone for my people, not just for me?
  • How long is the contract, and how do I cancel?

What HRGP includes for $99 a month

Comparison questions

How does HRGP compare with my payroll company's HR plan?

It depends on your plan, so ask your provider what's included and what it costs at your headcount. The main difference: HRGP works alongside any payroll company and doesn't run payroll itself.

Why don't you name other products here?

Prices and features change often, and we can't promise what another company offers today. Check with them directly. These questions will help you get straight answers.

Can I switch to HRGP from another system?

You can import applicants and employees from a spreadsheet. If your old system can export to a spreadsheet, that's a good place to start.
